Today, it seems like every child and teenager has a cell phone. But should children really be allowed to have cellular phones? It is dilemma that many parents face. There are pros and cons to each argument.

The main argument for allowing children to have cellular phones is safety. When a child has a cell phone, you can always contact him or her. The child is also able to call for help in the event of an emergency. Many phones on the market also have GPS capability, making it easier to locate your child via the cell phone if he or she becomes lost or missing. These are all practical reasons for allowing your child to have a cellular phone.

On the other hand, many parents feel that children are not responsible enough to use cellular phones. Although intended for emergencies only, many children (particularly preteens and teenagers) will abuse their phone privileges, instead gluing the phone to their ears for hours at a time to talk to friends. Texting is also a popular recreational use of cell phones among children and teens. When cellular phones are being used in this way, this strengthens the argument against giving your child a cell phone.

Ultimately, you must know your own child in order to make the right decision. If you do decide to give your child a cellular phone, you must decide at what age it is appropriate. Also, don't be afraid to set limits on the number of minutes that they can talk on the phone. Take advantage of parental controls. If you decide not to give your child a cell phone, then be firm in your decision. Don't allow your child to talk you into it, and don't be influenced by other parents who feel that it's okay. You are the parents, and you should always do what's best for your child.
